EXETER – Last week, the South Huron Rush concluded their season with two home games against Woodstock and Marconi, losing 4-0 in the former game and battling to a 1-1 draw in the latter.

In the Marconi game (Aug. 19), ninth-place South Huron faced the eighth-place Energy.

The game was much like an earlier meeting with both teams coming up with good scoring chances, but neither team capitalizing, according to Rush coach Tim Hundey.

On one of the final plays of the first half South Huron player Abby DeWeerd found herself in a scoring position in front of the net.

A quick-responding Marconi player took the chance away and the ball settled in front of Rush player Justine van Esbroeck.

No mistake was made on the play as van Esbroeck seemingly took a number of Marconi defenders and DeWeerd for a ride when she shot the ball into the lower corner.
South Huron took the one-goal lead into halftime.

Hundey said it seemed South Huron was destined to win its fourth game of the season, but Marconi found an equalizer late in the game off of a cross and brilliantly finished head ball.

The game ended shortly after in a 1-1 draw.

Earlier in the week, the Rush hosted the second-place Woodstock Spurs, hoping to avenge an 8-0 drubbing that took place in the second game of the season.

In the first half, the game looked to be favouring the Rush, as the home side controlled much of the play and created some good scoring opportunities.

Woodstock took a one-goal lead into the half, however, when a South Huron clearance was quickly turned into a scoring opportunity. Goalie Katie Brady had no chance on the ball, Hundey said.

In the second half, South Huron could not muster many strong scoring chances, but the same could not be said about Woodstock.

The Spurs added one early in the second half and two more late in the game for a 4-0 win.

Hundey noted a number of positives in the Woodstock game.

"This game was much closer than the 4-0 margin might indicate," he said. "We were in this game up until Woodstock added the two late goals and this was a huge improvement from the earlier game."

South Huron ended their season with 13 points, good for ninth in the league.
