EXETER – The Exeter Centennials hosted Nairn at Exeter Community Park Aug. 25, winning 4-1.
The first half of the game saw no goals by either team but most of the possession was controlled by the Centennials, according to team spokesperson Dan Kinsman.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Nairn had an offensive run that put the Centennials on their heels and Nairn quickly had the first goal of the game.
This "set the Centennials off as they had been outplaying their opponent the entire game but had just been unable to score up until this point," Kinsman said.
The next 25 minutes of play saw the Centennials score four goals to take the win.
The first was scored by Matt Prout, who found a loose ball off a rebound and found the back of the net.
The next was scored by Chris Hern, who had pinched in from the outside defence position to take the cross from Darren Marzailli, scoring what ended up as the game's winning goal.
Ryan Beattie scored the third goal with a perfectly placed free kick from 35 yards out that "stunned both the opposing team and Beattie's teammates," Kinsman said.
The fourth and final goal came on a similar shot by Kevin Ha that fooled the Nairn goalkeeper and came to rest just inside the far goal post.
Kinsman said the Centennials were satisfied with the win and happy to have redeemed themselves after losing to Nairn 1-0 a month before.
Kinsman said Exeter had solid defending by Ryan Ralph and Justin Muller that helped the team keep possession for the majority of the game, and solid goalkeeping from Kevin Parkins.
The Centennials' next game is Sept. 11 in London.
