EXETER – The Exeter Centennials men's soccer team hosted Middlesex June 30 and came away with a 4-2 win.
Coming into the game Middlesex was the top-ranked team in the division and Exeter was coming off two consecutive losses and struggling to stay in the top half of the standings.
The Cents came out strong and midway through the first half Darren Marzialli made a run to the corner and centered the ball to Andrew Prout, who finished for the game's first goal.
Middlesex scored the next two goals just before the end of the first half.
Team spokesperson Dan Kinsman said "inspirational words" from Dimitri Fragiskatos at halftime had the team fired up for the second half, which saw a number of scoring chances and saves from Dan Caslick.
Kinsman said the Centennials also had a solid overall effort from the entire defensive end.
Centennials player Kevin Ha scored on a solid shot from a corner kick to put the team back in the game, and moments later Middlesex put a shot in that beat Caslick and seemed destined for the back of the net but was stopped by a sliding Jared Easton.
Kinsman said Easton managed to get to the ball right before crossing the goal line.
Reeling from the great defensive play, the Centennials were rewarded another corner kick on which Matt Prout, just in on a recent substitution, found the back of the net.
Kinsman said in the dying minutes the team played well defensively and was able to spring Marzialli on a long pass, who made an excellent move to beat a sprawling Middlesex goalkeeper.
The game ended in a 4-2 Exeter win.
The Centennials' next game is today (July 7) at 8:30 p.m. at Exeter Community Park.
Kinsman said the Centennials encourage the community to come out and support their local mens team.
"The games are very entertaining and (the Centennials) would also like to thank their current fan base for all their support," he said.
