Mixed results for South Huron basketball teams

CLINTON – South Huron District High School’s senior boys basketball team faced two wildly different opponents last week, picking up a 40-28 win against struggling Central Huron but falling 51-21 to first-place St. Mike’s.   

The South Huron juniors saw similar results, winning 37-29 over last-place Central Huron but losing 64-10 to St. Mike’s, which at press time was in a three-way tie for first in the Huron-Perth league.   

Yegor Kubrak and Stephen Runhart led the seniors’ attack against Central Huron, scoring 14 points and 10 points, respectively.
 
Cody Brooks had seven points for South Huron, while Bart Rynen had four, Grayson Homuth had three and Erik Preston had two.  

Devin Simpson was the only Central Huron player to score in double digits, grabbing 12 points in the loss.   

South Huron’s offence was similarly stifled against St. Mike’s. Kubrak led the team with seven points while Tri Nguyen had four, Koedi Bryson had three, and Rynen, Homuth and Preston had two apiece.  

St. Mike’s gathered 17 points from Andrew O’Malley, 10 from Anthony Stott and eight from Ben Denham in the win.   

Ryan Horn shone for South Huron in both junior games, scoring 17 points in the win over Central Huron and 10 points in the loss to St. Mike’s.  

Brett McAllister had seven points against Central Huron while Raymond Knight had four points, Cole Willesen had three points, and Cody Merner had two.  

Nathan Runhart (six points) and Matt Knight-Bedour (two) were the only South Huron juniors to score against St. Mike's.   

At press time the South Huron seniors (3-3) were sixth in a 10-team Huron-Perth league, while the juniors (2-5) were eighth in an 11-team league.  

The teams return to action Feb. 6 at St. Marys.
