EXETER – The Exeter Hawks battled hard to beat the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs 5-4 in a shootout Friday night but suffered a 5-1 loss to the Lambeth Lancers Sunday.
Friday’s game saw Exeter jump out to a 3-1 first-period lead on the strength of goals from Justin Anstett, Scott Muirhead and Sam Jongeneel.
Jongeneel had assists on the Anstett and Muirhead tallies.
Mt. Brydges scored two unanswered goals in the second period to tie the game, though Exeter pulled ahead again with 6:37 remaining in the third period on a goal from Josh Brideau, assisted by Paul Bowden.
Mt. Brydges tied the game on a power play with 19 seconds left in regulation and neither team scored in overtime, sending the game to a shootout.
Hawks player Jake Jeffrey was the only competitor to find the net in the shootout, winning the game for Exeter.
“It was a real big win,” said Hawks coach Jeff MacLean in an interview. “It showed the guys that we could compete with the top teams in the league.”
Mt. Brydges had lost only one other game this season as of Friday, though they lost another Saturday night to the North Middlesex Stars.
North Middlesex and Mt. Brydges sat tied for first place in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Yeck Conference at press time, with Exeter in fourth.
Sunday against Lambeth, the Hawks trailed 1-0 after the first period but Anstett tied the game on a power play with 8:40 expired in the second frame. Muirhead and Brideau had assists on the goal.
Lambeth scored four unanswered goals in the third period to take the victory.
“It was really disappointing,” MacLean said. “They had played the night before. We should have had more energy .... we were the rested team.
MacLean said Lambeth scored a goal early in the third period and the Hawks players “just kind of got down.
“Lambeth pushed and we didn’t push back,” he added. “We gave up one (goal) and the floodgates opened. We’re not a confident bunch when we get behind in games and ... there were a lot of guys that just didn’t want to battle hard enough to win the game.”
MacLean said there are certain things that can be taught, but at the end of the day, players have to want to win, and hate to lose.
“They’ve got to individually take it on themselves to every shift compete and beat the guy that they’re lined up next to,” he said. “On Sunday night ... most guys just didn’t want to put in that second and third effort.”
The Hawks travel to Thamesford this coming Friday, then to Port Dover Saturday afternoon.
Thamesford sits second in the league’s Bauer Conference and figures to be a difficult opponent.
Port Dover may be less competitive – they sit last in the McConnell Conference and were winless as of press time.
