LUCAN – The Lucan Irish continued to struggle last week in games against difficult opponents. Lucan lost 6-2 to Ayr Wednesday night and 10-2 against Delhi Sunday evening.
Both Ayr and Delhi lead their divisions at press time, while Lucan sits last in the SOJHL's Yeck Conference.
Ayr struck first in Wednesday's game, scoring two unanswered goals in the first period.
Lucan tied the game early in the second period, thanks to quick goals from Nick Engel (assisted by Chris Read and Dustin McTaggart) and Travis Fulson (from Wes Huston).
Ayr regained its composure soon after, however, scoring two goals of their own in the second period and two more in the third period to take the win.
Lucan got out to an early lead Sunday against Delhi, thanks to a goal from Patrick Van Boxmeer 3:15 into the first period. Joel Nother and Huston had assists on the play.
Delhi tied the game late in the first frame, then scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second period.
Lucan's Tyler Medd answered with a goal of his own at 5:46 but Delhi added three goals later in the period and four more in the third period, putting the game well out of reach.
Irish goalie Steve Inglis had 26 saves in the loss, while Delhi keeper Justin Belanger had 30 stops in the win.
Lucan faces the Wellesley Applejacks tonight (Wednesday) at the Lucan Community Memorial Centre and then has a one-week layoff before facing the St. George Dukes Nov. 11 in Lucan.
Both Wellesley and St. George have sub-.500 records so far this season.
