The Lucan Irish are still last in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League's Yeck Conference, but they're likely a better team than their record indicates.
In a 2-1 win over the Exeter Hawks Oct. 21, the Irish played closer to their potential, according to co-head coach John Medd.
"They played a full 60 minutes," Medd said in an interview Monday. "It was a good game and the goalie (Steve Inglis) played well. Everybody's playing well."
Putting in a full game's effort is something the Irish coaches have been stressing, Medd said. They fell short of that goal Saturday in a 4-3 loss to the Hagersville Hawks.
Lucan led 2-1 after the second period but surrendered three quick goals in the first 11 minutes of the third period, a deficit they couldn't climb out of.
Irish player Coltin Durnin scored near the 12-minute mark to make the score 4-3, but the Irish failed to bury the puck again.
Jonathan Cameron and Nick Engel had the first two Irish goals, scored in the first and second periods, respectively.
"We played well (for) 40 minutes, and the first 10 minutes of the third period we went back on our heels and they took it to us," Medd said.
"We fought back, but we missed so many scoring chances it was unbelievable. The chances were there but we just couldn't finish and that's our big problem right now – we just can't finish those scoring chances.
"But hopefully it will come."
Lucan had 14 power plays but didn't convert on any of them, and missed three wide-open nets, Medd said.
"If we could finish them, then we would have won that game last night, no problem," he said.
The Irish face the Ayr Centennials tonight (Wednesday) at the Lucan Community Memorial Centre, then take on Delhi in a road game Friday night.
Medd said he's optimistic heading into those games.
"If we go back playing 60 minutes, we should be there," he said. "Should be close, but if we're not going to play a full game, then we're in trouble.

Better to have it now than in January, said Jets general manager Rob Andrews in an interview.
Though both Clinton and Milverton are strong teams, the Jets didn’t play well, Andrews said.
