THEDFORD – The Lucan Ilderton Jets remain undefeated this season and sat third in their division after a 5-2 win over the Thedford Dirty Dogs Saturday night.
The Thedford game was tightly contested, with goals traded in the first and second periods.
Lucan Ilderton's Joey Pikul opened the scoring roughly 14 minutes into the game, but Thedford's Craig Burns evened the score late in the first period.
Thedford's Stephen McLinchey put his team ahead late in the second frame, only to see Lucan Ilderton's Jason Wilson tie the game four minutes later.
Three goals from Lucan Ilderton in the third period was the difference: Matt Macfarlane, Jeff Silver and Pikul each scored during a three minute stretch late in the game.
"We had a real battle on our hands," said Jets general manager Rob Andrews. "The game showed a lot of character from our guys."
He noted Lucan Ilderton was missing some key players, but Andrews said that isn't an excuse.
"It's senior hockey – you're always going to be missing guys out of your lineup," he said.
Andrews gave a nod to Mike Miller, who got his first taste of WOAA Senior Men's Hockey against Thedford and "played an exceptional game."
The game took place in Thedford, which has a "smaller arena," Andrews said.
"With our team relying a lot on speed, they tried to neutralize that quite a bit by laying the body on us," he added. "But our guys withstood it. We caught a couple of breaks and scored three quick goals and that sort of put them on their heels."
Lucan Ilderton travels to Petrolia Friday night and will host Clinton Saturday night in Lucan.
Petrolia finished first in the WOAA South last season but is off to a slow start this year, losing two of their first five games.
"They're an awful good team," Andrews said. "We're looking for probably our toughest game of the year so far."
Clinton has also started slowly, sitting with a 1-2-1 record. Still, Clinton always seems to play the Jets tough, Andrews said.
The team is happy with how things have gone so far this season, Andrews added.
"We've still been unable to ice what I think is going to be our number one lineup for a game, but that's why you carry extra guys," he said. "We've been lucky that every night we've asked a guy to step in and play, they've been able to do that.
"We are going to have guys that their specific job will be to fill in when we're missing key players, and that's pretty tough to ask ... but so far we've been able to get those guys in."

MILVERTON – The Lucan Ilderton Jets hit a rough patch on the weekend, losing 3-2 to Clinton Friday night and 6-4 to Milverton Saturday night.
Better to have it now than in January, said Jets general manager Rob Andrews in an interview.
Though both Clinton and Milverton are strong teams, the Jets didn’t play well, Andrews said.
